I decided to word this a bit differently. Which if you've ever followed me on IG and see the word **Edit** ...that's me having a change of heart.
The why
I guess I wanted a visual reminder. Because the fight against injustice is a process and ongoing. I wanted to create a reminder that would help me to continue growing in wisdom and understanding. A reminder that would challenge others to keep caring even after things get quiet or nothing seems to look different.
I guess I've also been a bit frustrated and to be honest, tired, of the senseless loss of lives due to excessive police force, and wanted to come up with a way to speak out and make a statement.
My why could also represent the sentiment "black lives matter" as something more than a trend, and should definitely be the bare minimum. Black lives are essential, and worthy...it's not that nothing else matters, but it's something that seriously needs to be addressed and tends to be overlooked.
For me, my why behind the design is a call to speak out as John Lewis, civil rights activist, once said, to "get in the way.." He called it "good trouble." I guess this was sort of my way to do just that. Jewelry is always a great way to strike up a conversation.. just saying.
